The Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) Communications Department strives to strengthen national and statewide communications efforts, focuses on public education and awareness of domestic violence issues and has general overall responsibility for the public relations endeavors for TCFV. The TCFV Communications Department works collaboratively with a variety of media outlets in the development and distribution of important news releases, feature stories, story ideas and opinion/editorial (op/ed) pieces on domestic violence issues which are appropriate to statewide/national audiences.

Attorney General Abbott Announces Confidential Address Program For Crime Victims
Victims of family violence, stalking and sexual assault can register for anonymous address
AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott today announced that family violence, stalking and sexual assault victims may be eligible to participate in a new, state-sponsored address confidentiality program. Eligible Texans can register for an anonymous address that will appear on voter and school registration cards, driver’s licenses, and most government documents, including court records. Victim in Polygamist Compound Reaches out to Local Shelter for Assistance

A 16 year old girl living inside a polygamist compound in Eldorado reached out for help by calling a local family shelter in West Texas. The call was instrumental in the discovery of serious allegations of the physical and sexual abuse of children. “Calling the local shelter was an extremely courageous move on the young girl’s part” stated Sheryl Cates, CEO, National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) and the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV). Cates urged all victims of domestic and sexual abuse to contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for help. “Domestic abuse”, said Cates, “is intolerable, unacceptable and should be viewed by all as an assault on the very fabric of our families.” Continue Reading »


GETMAD to Host “A Day to Shine” Spring Prom Fashion Show

GETMAD (Girls Engaged in Making a Difference), a Westlake High School (WHS) service organization, will hold its First Annual “A Day to Shine: Prom Fashions from Morning to Night” benefit spring fashion extravaganza on March 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Austin Country Club located at 4408 Long Champ Drive.

Ms. Jaslene Gonzalez, the 2007 America’s Top Model Winner, will serve as the event’s guest speaker and joining Ms. Gonzalez as emcee will be Ms. Kristin Armstrong.

National Domestic Violence Hotline Celebrates Grand Reopening of Austin Facility

The National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH), headquartered in Austin, has undergone a complete renovation and expansion as a result of a major gift from Target. The Hotline was created by Congress as a result of the Violence Against Women Act and began operations in 1996. The Hotline will honor and recognize Target and other contributors on Tuesday, November 27, 2007, for their significant role in the renovation of Hotline facilities. Continue Reading »
