Agenda
1:00 PM – 02:15 PM
BIPP Ed Series | Part One – Myths of IPV
“Why doesn’t she just leave?” isn’t the only prevalent myth when it comes to victims of intimate partner violence. Victims are faced with scrutiny and judgement unlike any other victim of a crime. They are labeled “uncooperative” by the criminal justice system and often fear they are alone in seeking safety. There are many myths circling perpetrators’ use of power and control and what true reform looks like. In this 1-hour training Monica Nagy, LCSW, and Vice President of Community Intervention at SafeHaven of Tarrant County, will talk through ways you can educate your peers, clients, staff, and communities on keeping victims safe and holding offenders accountable. We will also tackle the question, “Do BIPPs really work?” and the issues with data in an already under-reported crime. We will close by discussing how your agency can utilize valid and reliable assessments to capture the effectiveness of your work with perpetrators.

BIPP Ed Series | Part Two – Specialty Groups
Do you have the capability to offer specialty groups at your BIPP? If so, are you following best practices? Monica Nagy, LCSW, and Vice President of Community Intervention at SafeHaven of Tarrant County will cover aspects of conducting Bilingual groups, LGBTQ groups, women’s groups, and volunteer/alumni groups with clients. The open format will allow for a discussion around differences in facilitating groups with clients who have already completed their court-mandated sessions and are interested in long-term maintenance, differences in facilitating groups with non-English speakers and how accuracy in translating curriculum can make a difference. The session will wrap up with specifics in conducting LGBTQ groups with clients on the gender spectrum, and how your program can incorporate specialty programming.

BIPP Ed Series | Part Three – Working with Survivors
How do you serve the interests of survivors without speaking with them? As a standalone BIPP it can be difficult to access survivors in your community, but it’s important to learn from survivors and understand their lived experiences when working with perpetrators. There’s a reason the Power & Control Wheel was created with survivor feedback, and that feedback needs to be continually sought and integrated into the intervention work we do on micro and macro levels. In this training, Monica Nagy, LCSW, and Vice President of Community Intervention at SafeHaven of Tarrant County, will discuss ways you can work within your community to connect with advocates and survivors and stay up to date on their lived experiences. The training will include lessons SafeHaven learned while conducting focus groups with survivors of IPV, and how your agency can use a trauma-informed approach when working with survivors and advocates to incorporate best practices at your BIPP.

Speakers
Monica is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Vice President of Community Intervention at SafeHaven of Tarrant County. Nagy oversees the Partner Abuse Intervention & Prevention (PAIP) program at SafeHaven, which is commonly referred to as a “Battering Intervention and Prevention Program” (BIPP). Nagy worked to expand the agency’s intervention services in the past five years by quadrupling the number of groups and providing specialty programming. When the pandemic hit, Nagy and her team created a virtual program plan that incorporated best practices in intimate partner violence (IPV) offender accountability and victim safety while providing services online. Nagy uses her knowledge of predominant aggressors to provide trainings for local criminal justice entities and schools. That work is also carried out in the Domestic Violence High-Risk team she oversees. Nagy is currently on the Tarrant County Adult IPV Fatality Review and Child Fatality Review. She provides expert testimony on Misdemeanor IPV cases, and regularly collaborates with the Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs (DAIP) on predominate aggressor rehabilitation, advanced IPV training, and the implementation of a coordinated community response (CCR) model in Tarrant County, Texas. Nagy is currently overseeing focus groups with survivors of IPV as a part of a Safety Audit. Prior to work with SafeHaven, Nagy was a journalist for major metropolitan newspapers and magazines where she covered crime and politics.
