The goal of motivational interviewing is to integrate motivational interviewing techniques as part of routine practice to support survivors or victims of crime to make positive changes and maintaining autonomy to decide what services are best for them. Motivational interviewing uses a four-stage process: engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning.

Learning Objectives

1. Learn about the 5 A’s of motivational interviewing: Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange
2. These steps are used in advocacy setting to encourage survivors to take action and engage in self-management for healthy behavior changes.
3. Learn how motivational interviewing (MI) differs from traditional communication styles used in victim advocacy services and why it can effectively motivate positive behavior changes.
4. Integrate MI best practices with survivors to promote empowerment and autonomy to help them to live a life free of violence
