Capitol Day

On February 14, TCFV, Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) and Mary Kay Inc. are teaming up to stage Capitol Day in Austin to raise awareness on behalf of family violence and sexual assault victims and programs statewide during the 82nd Texas Legislature. We invite you to join us and advocate for family violence programs to maintain full funding to continue saving lives.

The day will start with a welcome event at First United Methodist Church downtown where we will decorate posters and give first time attendees helpful tips for effective lobbying. After we assemble, we will march across the street to the state capitol and host a brief press conference on the south steps. We will then visit the offices our legislators to personally petition for the 2011 TCFV and TAASA initiatives.

We need your help. This year, Texas programs are in jeopardy of not receiving full funding due to the estimated $25 billion budget short-fall. Cutting funding for these programs does not minimize costs, it creates additional costs. Limited funding not only means additonal financial strains on areas like law enforcement, the criminal and civil justice systems, and the business community; it means a loss of life, potentially preventable with continued financial support. When victims in dire need of shelter are turned away as a result of funding cuts, victims stay longer in abusive relationships and experience worse abuse at the hands of their batterers.

Walk with us. Chant loudly on behalf of all of the men and women in abusive situations who feel that they no longer have a voice. Talk to your representative. Get the word out that victims deserve all the help we can give them.

We will be posting additional information soon about the logistics of the day and more resources for how you can help. Please stay tuned. Food will be provided to attendees at the morning event. Please help us plan for this by registering below.
