This virtual training will consist of three, 90-minute interactive workshops. Attending all three will provide you with 4.5 BIPP TDCJ-CIAD Approved Training Hours and 4.5 LPC, LMFT, and SW CEUs.

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Culture Matters Series 1: Why Culture is Important in BIPP

This interactive session will center on the crucial role that culture and intersectionality play in BIPP and explore the importance of awareness of one’s own culture and its impact on group members. The workshop will also identify explicit and implicit biases in an effort to improve group dynamics and share practical tools to work cross-culturally in group settings.

Culture Matters Series 2: The Role Oppression and Privilege in BIPP

This interactive session will identify key elements of cultural humility and solidarity, including the empathic understanding of oppression and intersectionality, including a power imbalance analysis. It will include a critical assessment of one’s own privilege and its relevance in working with people who cause harm.

Culture Matters Series 3: Institutional Accountability in BIPP

The last session of the series will build upon the previous ones and analyze how systemic oppression is a barrier to genuine change in abusive partners. It will offer practical solutions to facilitate the process of change when working cross-culturally in BIPPs.

Juan Carlos Areán, Ph.D

Juan Carlos Areán, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized activist, public speaker, trainer and facilitator, and published author. Since 1991, he has worked to engage men across different cultures to become better fathers, intimate partners, and allies to end domestic violence and achieve gender equity. He presently works as a Program Director at Futures Without Violence. Previously, he served as Director of the National Latin@ Network at Casa de Esperanza and as a Sexual Assault Prevention Specialist at Harvard University. Dr. Areán is a founding member of the United Nations Network of Men Leaders to Combat Violence against Women, created by former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He is an active trainer and facilitator who has led hundreds of workshops and presentations throughout the United States, the Americas, and the Caribbean, as well as in Europe, Asia, the US Congress, and the United Nations in New York and Geneva.

Refunds and Cancellation: 

Cancellation requests must be sent to fvsc@tcfv.org no later than May 24, 2024 to be considered for a refund minus a 25% processing fee. All cancellations and refunds will be processed in the same manner as the original payment. Payments by credit card will be refunded to the card on record and may take up to 30 days to process post conference. No refunds will be made for cancellation requests received after May 24, 2024. Refunds will be made after June 12, 2024.  Please email fvsc@tcfv.org with any questions.

Please note each workshop will have a different zoom link which will be sent via your email after registration. To receive the member discount on registration, please ensure you are logged in to your Coalition Manager account. Submit a CM Support ticket if you are having issues logging into your Coalition Manager account.  There is no option for a group discount for this series of workshops.
