Facilitated by Rebecca White, The Content Cove
Session limited to 2 per agency
10:00am – 11:30am
This workshop focuses on Departure-Defined Transition Planning, the proactive work organizations can do long before a leadership transition occurs. Rather than treating succession planning as a document to complete, we’ll explore how it can strengthen leadership, governance, and organizational capacity today while preparing for tomorrow. We will also apply a Founder Lens for organizations who will manage the transition of a founder or long-serving Executive Director. A healthy organization changes the experience of leading today. That’s why we approach succession planning as an organizational design practice rather than simply a transition plan.
Participants will learn how to:
➔ Define Purpose, Scope, and Accountability Establish clear board and Executive Director roles, responsibilities, and decision-making throughout the succession planning process using a 10-Step Roadmap.
➔ Diagnose Your Organization’s Next Era Use Susan Kenny Stevens’ Nonprofit Lifecycle framework to identify how today’s decisions shape tomorrow’s leadership needs and determine the capabilities your organization requires.
➔ Build a Leadership Profile for Your Next Era Define the leadership competencies your organization will need next using the Position Profile Template and “Now and Later” assessment.
➔ Build Leadership Capacity Identify internal talent, development opportunities, and cross-training priorities so executive responsibility is shared rather than concentrated in one individual.
➔ Navigate the Human Side of Transition Apply William Bridges’ Transition Model to help boards, staff, and constituents successfully navigate the Endings that accompany leadership change. We’ll also explore the additional considerations unique to founder and long-serving Executive Director transitions.
➔ Create a Board-Ready Succession Plan Bring the work together into a practical succession plan that strengthens the organization today while preparing confidently for future leadership transitions.
Effective succession planning asks whether leadership, knowledge, relationships, and responsibility are being built in ways that can be transferred with confidence.
