This workshop focuses on Unplanned Departures and helping organizations prepare for sudden executive absences while protecting mission delivery, maintaining organizational stability, and ensuring leadership continuity. Participants will leave with practical tools they can immediately adapt to their own organizations. Within this workshop we will also apply a Crisis Lens, providing practical approaches for navigating unexpected events with the potential to damage mission, reputation, or organizational stability.

Participants will learn how to:

➔ Protect Organizational Continuity Build a Leadership Continuity Dashboard that identifies essential executive functions, delegated authority, and critical decision-making responsibilities before an unexpected absence occurs.

➔ Distribute Executive Responsibility Identify internal leaders who can assume different components of the Executive Director role, clarify decision-making authority, and reduce dependence on a single individual.

➔ Determine the Right Leadership Response Develop a practical framework for deciding when executive responsibilities can be distributed internally, when an Acting Executive is appropriate, and when an Interim Executive is needed, including the Board’s responsibilities throughout the transition.

➔ Preserve Critical Knowledge and Relationships Capture institutional knowledge, operational processes, and key community relationships so they become organizational assets rather than personal ones.

➔ Lead Through the Transition Apply William Bridges’ Transition Model to help organizations move confidently through the Neutral Zone and into a successful New Beginning by creating thoughtful communication, onboarding, and integration plans for the Board, staff, and incoming Executive Director.

Organizations can’t prevent every unexpected leadership change. They can prepare to respond with clarity, confidence, and continuity.

Participants will learn how to:

➔ Define Purpose, Scope, and Accountability Establish clear board and Executive Director roles, responsibilities, and decision-making throughout the succession planning process using a 10-Step Roadmap.

➔ Diagnose Your Organization’s Next Era Use Susan Kenny Stevens’ Nonprofit Lifecycle framework to identify how today’s decisions shape tomorrow’s leadership needs and determine the capabilities your organization requires.

➔ Build a Leadership Profile for Your Next Era Define the leadership competencies your organization will need next using the Position Profile Template and “Now and Later” assessment.

➔ Build Leadership Capacity Identify internal talent, development    opportunities, and cross-training priorities so executive responsibility is shared rather than concentrated in one individual.

➔ Navigate the Human Side of Transition Apply William Bridges’ Transition Model to help boards, staff, and constituents successfully navigate the Endings that accompany leadership change. We’ll also explore the additional considerations unique to  founder and long-serving Executive Director transitions.

➔ Create a Board-Ready Succession Plan Bring the work together into a practical succession plan that strengthens the organization today while preparing confidently for future leadership transitions.

Effective succession planning asks whether leadership, knowledge, relationships, and responsibility are being built in ways that can be transferred with confidence.
